Stacey Mastrian, a “sweet, shimmering soprano” (The Washington Post) who is “versatile and passionate” (Der Tagesspiegel), performs repertoire that spans from the late Renaissance to the present and from traditional to experimental, with international television, radio, and internet broadcasts. 

The 2011 season marked Ms. Mastrian’s debut at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, performing the Soprano Solo and covering the role of La Compagna in Luigi Nono’s Intolleranza 1960 for a production mounted for the 50th anniversary of the premiere. During the 2009-2010 season, she was a Young Artist with Opera Lafayette, and she has performed with the company at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, the Terrace and Eisenhower Theaters at the Kennedy Center, Rose Hall–Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian, Strathmore Hall, in outreach concerts, and on a world-premiere recording released on the NAXOS label. In the role of Gilda (Rigoletto) with the Summer Opera Theatre Company, The Washington Times lauded her “exquisitely etched performance, unveiling delicate, silvery tones and pinpoint accuracy,” and she was named a Richard F. Gold Career Grant recipient. Other operatic roles range from Amor/Damigella (L’incoronazione di Poppea) to Sidonie, Bergère, and Lucinde (Gluck's Armide), the Dew Fairy (Hansel und Gretel), Sister Genevieve (Suor Angelica), and new works. Operetta experience includes Adele (Die Fledermaus), the title role in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience, and Mabel (The Pirates of Penzance), which she performed thirty times in 2008 and 2010 with the Washington Savoyards to critical and popular acclaim. 

In concert, Ms. Mastrian has sung works from across the spectrum: standard oratorio repertoire with orchestras and choral societies, art song recitals extensively in many locations, and innovative multidisciplinary premieres at new music conferences and festivals. Under the baton of Lothar Zagrosek with the Konzerthaus Orchestra at the Konzerthaus in Berlin, the Berliner Zeitung described her delivery as “Very impressive, the American soprano Stacey Mastrian sang with tremendous ease and beauty.” She has appeared with the Nova Amadeus Orchestra (Rome), Experimentalstudio Freiburg at the Fondazione Cini (Venice), at the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur (Montréal), the Maxim Gorki Theater (Berlin), Conservatory Respighi (Latina), St. Peter’s (Vatican City), and from coast to coast in the U.S. Her recent appearance at the Frederick Loewe Theater in NYC for the Electronic Music Foundation was praised in The New York Times for “intensity, focus and a warm, passionate sound," and she is in demand for her interpretations of works by John Cage and Morton Feldman. 

Recordings on which Ms. Mastrian appears include two new releases on the Neuma label: a DVD entitled Thomas DeLio space / image / word / sound and the CD Thomas DeLio Selected Compositions (1991-2013). A second CD with Opera Lafayette on the NAXOS label and a DVD with The Bay Players Experimental Music Collective are in post-production, and she also has several solo recording projects in progress. 

Ms. Mastrian has been a Fulbright Grantee and Beebe Fellow to Italy and has been awarded prizes from organizations such as The American Bach Society/Bethlehem Bach Choir, International Joseph Traxel Society, Maryland Opera Society, Mu Phi Epsilon, National Association of Teachers of Singing, National Italian American Foundation, Rosa Ponselle Foundation, Shoshana Foundation, and Vocal Arts DC. She has been honored with scholarship support to attend the SongFest professional program and a Max Kade scholarship for the German for Singers program at Middlebury College. As the 2013 Soloist Winner of The Respighi Prize Music Competition, Ms. Mastrian will have the opportunity to make her debut with the Chamber Orchestra of New York at a major venue in NYC in 2014. 

Dr. Mastrian received a B.M., summa cum laude, in vocal performance from The Catholic University of America, where she received a full tuition scholarship, and she earned an M.M. in opera performance (Maryland Opera Studio) and a D.M.A. in voice performance from the University of Maryland, where she was a scholarship and full fellowship recipient. Her dissertation project was entitled Selected Vocal Works by Progressive Italian Composers of the Twentieth Century: The Confluence of Nationalism & Internationalism from the Eve of World War I through Post-World War II Reconstruction. She is a frequent lecturer and recitalist on this topic.
